「アルジェリアはどこにあるか知っていますか？」 留学生から聞いたリアル・アフリカ！

NO1 「アルジェリアはどこにあるか知っていますか？」

　　留学生から聞いたリアル・アフリカ！

昨年末、市内でとある海外留学生と出会いました。

彼は高身長でスリムな体型、アラブ系の端正な顔立ちをしていて、

とてもハンサムな青年でした。 

最初は簡単な挨拶程度でしたが、会話をしてみるととても

面白い人物であることが分かりました。

まず、最初に彼が聞いてきたのは、「アルジェリアがどこにあるか

知っていますか？」という質問でした。

私は「えーと、アフリカの…エジプトの隣？いや、エチオピアの近く？」と

答えましたが、彼は笑いながら「やっぱり！」という反応をしました。

日本人の多くがアルジェリアの位置を知らないことに慣れているようです。

〇アルジェリアについて

私はこれまでケニア、エチオピア、タンザニアからの留学生とは

話したことがありましたが、アルジェリアについて詳しく知る機会は

ありませんでした。

アルジェリアという国名は知っていたものの、正確な場所は

よく分かっていなかったのです。

余談ですが、アルジェリアと聞くとすぐにナイジェリアを

連想します。（笑） 

調べてみると、アルジェリアは地中海に面したアフリカで

2番目に広い国で、面積はなんと日本の約6倍もあるそうです。

国土の約80％がサハラ砂漠で、壮大な砂丘や奇岩群が広がる

美しい景観が特徴とのこと。

また、観光地も豊富で、地中海沿岸の都市からサハラ砂漠の秘境まで、

多くの魅力にあふれています。 

〇意外だったアルジェリアの冬

私は「アルジェリアは地中海沿岸だから冬でも雪は降らないんじゃない？」と尋ねました。

すると彼は、「アルジェリアにはアトラス山脈が広がっていて、

冬にはスキーも楽しめますよ」と教えてくれました。

私は、まさかアフリカでスキーができるとは思わなかったので

本当に驚きました。　（汗） 

〇日本に来た理由

会話が弾む中、私は彼に「なぜ日本、そして松山に来たのですか？」と

尋ねました。

彼の答えは、「ほとんどの友人はヨーロッパ各地に留学しましたが、

私は日本で学んだ経験のある友人から『日本は近代的で綺麗で

住みやすいよ』と勧められたから」とのことでした。

さらに、「日本の電機産業は、有名なので、将来はパナソニックや

日立といった企業で働きたいとも思っています」とも話していました。

彼の日本に対する関心は、単なる留学にとどまらず、

将来のキャリアにもつながっているようです。

〇日本での生活と文化

「日本の生活や物価はどうですか？」と尋ねると、「まだ来たばかりだけど、

日本は物価が安く、食品も手頃な価格で手に入るので驚いています。

また、社会が安心・安全なので住みやすいと思います」とのことでした。

好きな食べ物は「寿司」また「居酒屋は好きですね～。」とも。（笑） 

また、日本人女性についての印象を聞いてみると、

彼は笑いながら「日本の女性は可愛らしいと思います。

でも、話しかけても『私は英語が話せないので…』と

断られてしまうことが多くて…。非常に残念です。

だから、早く日本語を上達させたいですね。

日本人の彼女が欲しいです！」と話していました。

また、余談ですが、私は　以前　トルコの　「トロイの木馬」のモデル都市

から来た女性の留学生と話した事があります。

その女性は　「日本の女性は鼻が低く丸っこくて可愛いので、

私は憧れる」と話した事を紹介すると

彼は　笑いながら　「確かにヨーロッパの女性は　鼻が高く　

ツンとしていて　綺麗だけど～。　丸い鼻の日本の女性の方が可愛いと思います」

と言いました　（笑）

“Do You Know Where Algeria Is?”

Real Africa, as Told by an International Student!

At the end of last year, I met an international student in the city.
He was tall, had a slim build, and a handsome Arab-like face.
He was truly a good-looking young man.

At first, our conversation was limited to simple greetings,
but as we talked more, I realized he was a very interesting person.
The first thing he asked me was, “Do you know where Algeria is?”
I responded hesitantly, “Uh… Africa… next to Egypt?
No, maybe near Ethiopia?”
He laughed and said, “I knew it!”
It seemed he was used to Japanese people not knowing where Algeria is.

About Algeria

I had spoken with international students from Kenya, Ethiopia,
and Tanzania before, but I had never had the opportunity
to learn much about Algeria.
I knew the name of the country,
but I wasn’t exactly sure where it was located.
Just as a side note, whenever I hear “Algeria,”
I immediately associate it with “Nigeria.” (LOL)

After looking it up,
I found out that Algeria is the second-largest country in Africa,
bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
Its land area is about six times that of Japan!
About 80% of the country is covered by the Sahara Desert,
featuring stunning landscapes with vast sand dunes and unique rock formations.
It also has numerous tourist attractions,
ranging from Mediterranean coastal cities to hidden gems in the Sahara Desert.

Algeria’s Surprisingly Cold Winters

I asked him, “Since Algeria is on the Mediterranean coast,
it doesn’t snow in winter, right?”
He responded, “Actually, the Atlas Mountains stretch across Algeria,
and you can even go skiing in winter!”
I was shocked—I never imagined you could ski in Africa! 😲

Why He Came to Japan

As our conversation continued, I asked him,
“Why did you choose Japan, and why Matsuyama?”
He explained, “Most of my friends went to study in Europe,
but one of my friends who had studied in Japan recommended it to me.
He said, ‘Japan is modern, clean, and a great place to live.'”

He added, “Japan is also famous for its electronics industry,
so in the future, I’d like to work for companies like Panasonic or Hitachi.”
His interest in Japan was not just about studying abroad—
it was also connected to his future career.

Life and Culture in Japan

When I asked, “How do you find life in Japan?
What about the cost of living?”, he said, “I just arrived,
but I’m surprised that prices are relatively low,
and food is quite affordable.
Also, Japan is very safe, making it a comfortable place to live.”
His favorite Japanese food? “Sushi! Also, I love izakayas.” (LOL)

I also asked for his impression of Japanese women.
He smiled and said, “I think Japanese women are really cute.
But when I try to talk to them, many say,
‘I don’t speak English…’ and turn me down.
That’s a shame! So I want to improve my Japanese quickly.
I really want a Japanese girlfriend!”

As a side note, I once spoke with a female international student
from the Turkish city that inspired the legend of the “Trojan Horse.”
She said, “Japanese women have small, round noses, which I find adorable.
I envy them!”
When I shared this with him, he laughed and said,
“It’s true—European women have high noses and look elegant,
but I think Japanese women, with their round noses, are cuter!” (LOL)
