アメリカ国内で裁判が始まったというのです。
まさに電光石火。
あまりにも急な展開に、正直「本当にこんなことが起きるのか」と耳を疑いました。
■ 私にとっての「ベネズエラ」という国
このニュースに接し、私の脳裏には、ある忘れられない記憶がよみがえりました。
今からおよそ30年前、私は特派員研修でアメリカ・ニューヨークに滞在していました。
到着後、まず頭を悩ませたのが住まい探しです。
初めての海外生活。ニューヨークは広く、下見にも時間がかかりました。
「中心部から遠い」「部屋が狭い」「家賃が高い」――
なかなか条件に合う物件が見つかりません。
そんな中、現地の日本人不動産会社の女性が、最後にこう言ってくれました。
「少し高いかもしれませんが、ここはいかがですか？」
案内されたのは、マンハッタン中心部。
グランドセントラル駅やセントラルパークにも近い、高級高層マンションでした。

■ 54階建て、44階の“夢の部屋”
下見に行ってみると、そこは54階建てのマンションの44階。
アメリカでいう「スタジオタイプ」（日本なら広めの1LDK）で、
大きな窓からはエンパイアステートビルをはじめ、
摩天楼が一望できる素晴らしい部屋でした。
「どう考えても高そうだな……」
そう思いながら家賃を聞くと、月2,300ドル。
当時は円高で、1ドル＝約105円。日本円で約25万円です。
今なら円安の影響もあり、40〜50万円はするかもしれません。
少し無理を言って、会社に了承をもらい、この部屋を借りることにしました。
結果的に――本当にラッキーでした。
会社までは徒歩10分ほど。
大通りをまっすぐ歩くだけの、これ以上ない立地だったのです。
■ 意外すぎた「オーナーの正体」
契約手続きに入ると、担当者から
「オーナーにすぐ連絡します。多分問題ないと思います」
と言われました。
ところが数日どころか、1週間経っても返事がありません。
「連絡が取れない状態が続いています」とのこと。
当然、オーナーは地元のアメリカ人だと思っていた私は、
次に聞かされた言葉に驚きました。
「実は、オーナーはベネズエラの銀行家で、大変な資産家なんです」
10日ほどして、ようやく「OK」が出て、無事に契約成立。
この契約書のコピーは、今でも大切に保管しています（笑）。
当時のベネズエラは、世界有数の産油国。
グローバリゼーションの波に乗り、富裕層はニューヨーク、ロンドン、
スイスなどを飛び回ってビジネスを展開していました。
「なかなか連絡が取れなかった」のも、今思えば納得です。
■ あの頃のベネズエラと、今のベネズエラ
当時、アメリカは景気後退局面にあり、銀行家である彼は資産管理と
有効な投資先を探していたのかもしれません。
私はその部屋で、まさに**“夢のニューヨーク生活”**を味わいました。
退去時もトラブルは一切なく、すべてがスムーズだった記憶があります。
余談ですが、そのマンションの最上階ペントハウスは、
当時でも15〜20億円と言われていました。
そこも、「ベネズエラの金持ちが買うかも？」と言われていました。
現在なら……50億円超かもしれません（汗）。

At the very beginning of 2026,
a shocking event shook the world.
The United States launched an attack on Venezuela,
detained the country’s president and first lady,
and began legal proceedings against them in the U.S.
The operation unfolded with lightning speed.
I was genuinely stunned.
It was hard to believe that
such a dramatic turn of events could happen so suddenly.
■ My Personal Connection to Venezuela
This news immediately brought back
an unforgettable memory related to Venezuela.
About thirty years ago,
I was staying in New York City for
a special correspondent training program.
As anyone who has lived in New York knows,
finding a place to live is no easy task—
especially for someone experiencing their first long-term stay overseas.
New York is vast, and property viewings took time.
Some apartments were too far from the center,
others too small, others simply impractical.
Choosing the right place was far from easy.
Then, a Japanese real estate agent who was helping me
said enthusiastically,
“It may be a bit expensive, but how about this one?”

■ A Luxury High-Rise in the Heart of Manhattan
The apartment she showed me was located in the very heart of Manhattan,
close to Grand Central Station and Central Park—
a luxury high-rise condominium.
When I went to see it, I was amazed.
The building had 54 floors, and the unit was on the 44th floor.
It was a “studio” apartment by American standards
(roughly equivalent to a spacious one-bedroom apartment in Japan).
Through the large windows,
I could see the Empire State Building and
a sweeping panorama of Manhattan’s skyscrapers.
It was truly spectacular.
“This must be expensive,” I thought.
The rent was $2,300 per month.
At the time, the exchange rate was about 105 yen to the dollar,
so it came to roughly 250,000 yen.
After some negotiation, my company agreed to cover it.
Looking back, I realize how incredibly lucky I was.
The office was only a ten-minute walk away,
straight down a major avenue.
The location could not have been better.
■ The Surprising Identity of the Owner
When I asked the agent to proceed with the contract,
she told me,
“I’ll contact the owner right away.
I don’t think there will be any problem.”
However, days passed—then a week—without any response.
She kept telling me, “We can’t seem to reach him.”
Naturally, I assumed the owner was an American.
Then came the unexpected revelation.
“The owner,” she explained, “is a Venezuelan banker—
a very wealthy one.”
After about ten days, we finally received his approval,
and the contract was signed.
I still keep a copy of that contract to this day (laughs).
At that time,Venezuela was one of
the world’s major oil-producing countries.
Its wealthy elite traveled constantly between New York,
London, and Switzerland, doing business on
a truly global scale.
No wonder it had been difficult to get in touch with him.
■ Then and Now: Venezuela’s Changing Fortunes
The United States was experiencing an economic slowdown
at the time, and as a banker,
the owner was likely focused on asset management and
finding promising investment opportunities.
During my stay, I truly enjoyed what felt like
a “dream life in New York.”
When I moved out, everything was handled smoothly and
without any issues.
As an aside,
the penthouse on the top floor of that
building was said to be worth 15–20 billion yen even back then.
It was also said, “Maybe a rich man in Venezuela will buy it?”
Today, it would probably be worth over 50 billion yen.
