道後温泉で出会った若きITエンジニアの本音と、5歳の少年の夢

先日、地元・愛媛の名湯である道後温泉を訪れた際、印象的な出会いがありました。

湯上がりの休憩所で隣り合わせになったのは、神奈川県から旅行に来ていた一人の若い男性。
話を聞くと、ITエンジニアとして働いているとのことでした。
私は最近、急速に進化するAI技術に強い関心を持っているため、思わずこう尋ねました。
「最近、AIの進化はすごいですね。実際の仕事でも変化を感じますか？
どんなツールを使っていますか？」
彼は少し笑いながら、「クラウドですね。仕事で使う場面が本当に増えました。
優秀なので、作業効率はかなり上がっています」と答えてくれました。
確かに、現場でAIを使う若い世代にとって、
それはすでに“未来”ではなく“日常”なのでしょう。
私は続けて、少し刺激的な話をしました。
「近い将来、AI時代になると、弁護士や会計士といった専門職も
大きく変わるかもしれませんね」
すると彼は、「本当ですか？」と驚いた表情を見せました。
そこで私は、1990年代初頭にニューヨークで研修を受けていた頃の
体験を話しました。
当時、CG制作は極めて高価な専用コンピューターを使う最先端の仕事でした。
1秒30フレーム、わずか10秒のCGタイトルを作るために300枚もの画像を制作し、
最終出力には一晩、約10時間もかかっていたのです。

しかし現在では、企画内容をAIにプロンプト入力するだけで、
早ければ数分で映像が完成してしまう時代になりました。
技術革新の速度は、人間の想像をはるかに超えています。
AI時代に広がる「静かな不安」
私は彼に「AI失業」について率直な意見を聞いてみました。
彼は少し考えながらこう言いました。
「正直、人がやるより早くて正確だと感じる場面は増えています。
将来的には、人の仕事が減る可能性もありますよね。」
そして続けました。
「これからはAIツールを使いこなせる人が求められると思います。
でも、自分がどこまで対応できるのか……それが少し不安です。」
この言葉は、多くの働く世代が抱えている本音ではないでしょうか。
これから求められるAI時代のスキルとは？
AI時代に必要なのは、単なるIT知識だけではありません。
今後求められるのは、次のような能力だと感じます。

• AIに適切な指示を出す「プロンプト思考力」
• 情報の真偽を見抜く判断力
• 異なる分野を結びつける発想力
• 人と人をつなぐコミュニケーション能力
• 現場でしか得られない体験価値

つまり、「AIに仕事を奪われない人」とは、
AIを道具として使い、人間にしかできない価値を生み出せる人なのです。

彼は静かにうなずきながら、
「今から何をどれだけ学ぶべきか。それが一番の課題ですね」
と語っていました。その後、彼は翌日帰る予定だと言い、
「地元の人に人気の飲食店はありますか？」と尋ねてきました。
私は松山で評判のスパゲッティ店を紹介し、短い旅の会話は終わりました。

そして、もう一つの出会い
その後、偶然、小さな子ども連れの家族と出会いました。
「何歳ですか？」と聞くと、男の子は両手いっぱいに広げて「5歳！」。
私は何気なく尋ねました。
「将来の夢は？」
少し考え込んだ後、小さな声で何かを答えます。
聞き取れなかった私に代わり、お父さんが微笑みながら教えてくれました。
「水族館の飼育員になりたいそうです。」
正直、私は最近の子どもたちは「ユーチューバー」や「エンジニア」と
答えるものだと思い込んでいました。
しかし、その予想は見事に外れました。

 水族館の飼育員――。
生き物と向き合い、命を守り、観察し続ける仕事。
それはAIが簡単に代替できない、人間らしい職業の一つです。
温泉で出会った若きITエンジニアの未来への不安と、5歳の少年が語った素朴な夢。
技術がどれほど進化しても、人が何を目指し、どんな仕事に意味を見出すのか――
その答えは、まだ人間の心の中にあるのだと感じた一日でした。

AI, Work, and a 5-Year-Old’s Dream: A Story from a Japanese Onsen” 

The other day, I visited Dogo Onsen,
one of the most famous hot spring resorts
in my hometown of Ehime.
During the visit, I had an encounter that left a lasting impression.
At the resting area after the bath,
I found myself sitting next to a young man
who had come to visit from Kanagawa Prefecture.
As we started chatting,he told me that he works as an IT engineer.
Recently, I have become very interested in the rapid development of
AI technology, so I couldn’t help asking him:
“AI technology has been evolving incredibly fast lately.
Do you feel changes in your actual work?
What kind of tools are you using?”
He smiled slightly and replied,“Cloud services, mostly.
We use them much more frequently now.
They’re very powerful,so our work efficiency has improved a lot.”
For young professionals already using AI in their daily work,
it seems that this technology is no longer “the future” —
it has already become part of everyday life.
I then added a slightly provocative thought.
“In the near future, as the AI era progresses,
even professional jobs like lawyers or
accountants might change significantly.”
He looked surprised.
“Really?”
So I told him about my experience from the early 1990s,
when I was receiving training in New York.
Back then,
computer graphics production required extremely
expensive specialized computers and was considered cutting-edge work.
To create just a 10-second CG title sequence at 30 frames per second,
we had to produce about 300 individual images.
The final rendering process alone took an entire night — nearly ten hours.
Today, however,
you can simply enter a prompt into an AI system,
and in some cases a video can be generated within minutes.

The speed of technological innovation has far exceeded
what humans once imagined.
The Quiet Anxiety Spreading in the Age of AI
I asked him honestly what he thought about
“AI-driven job loss.”
After thinking for a moment, he said:
“To be honest, there are more and more situations
where AI is faster and more accurate than humans.
In the future, it’s possible that human jobs could decrease.”
He continued:
“I think people who can use AI tools effectively will be in demand.
But I’m not sure how well I can keep up with everything…
and that worries me a little.”
His words may reflect the quiet concern shared by
many working people today.
What Skills Will Be Needed in the AI Era?
In the age of AI,
simple IT knowledge alone will not be enough.
What will be increasingly important are skills such as:

• The ability to give effective instructions to AI — prompt thinking
• Critical thinking to judge whether information is reliable
• Creativity to connect ideas from different fields
• Communication skills that connect people
• Real-world experiences that can only be gained on the ground

In other words, the people who will not lose their jobs to AI
are those who can use AI
as a tool and create value that only humans can provide.
He nodded quietly and said,
“The biggest question is what we should start learning now,
and how much.”
Later, he mentioned that he would be returning home
the next day and asked:
“Are there any restaurants popular with locals?”
I recommended a well-known spaghetti restaurant in Matsuyama,
and our brief travel conversation came to an end.

Another EncounterLater that day, I happened to meet a family traveling
with a small child.
“How old are you?” I asked.
The boy stretched his arms wide and proudly said,
“Five!”I casually asked him,
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
After thinking for a moment,he answered in a small voice.
I couldn’t quite hear him,but his father smiled and explained:
“He wants to become an aquarium keeper.”
To be honest,
I had assumed that many children these days would say
they want to be a YouTuber or an engineer.
But my expectation was completely wrong.
An aquarium keeper.
A job that involves caring for living creatures,
protecting life, and observing them closely every day.
It is one of those deeply human professions that
AI cannot easily replace.
The quiet anxiety about the future expressed by
a young IT engineer I met at a hot spring,
and the simple dream shared by a five-year-old boy.
No matter how much technology evolves,
what people choose to pursue andwhat meaning they find in their work
still seems to lie within the human heart.

It was a day that reminded me of that truth.
