「アルジェリアはどこにあるか知っていますか？」

　　NO2　留学生から聞いたリアルなアフリカの国情

昨年出会ったアルジェリアからの留学生のお話です。

私は、アフリカには行った事がないので、いろいろリアルな現状をお聞きしました。 

〇アルジェリアの社会生活と産業・経済

アルジェリアの社会生活についても、

彼から興味深い話を聞くことができました。

アルジェリアはフランスの植民地支配から独立した歴史があり、

現在もフランス文化の影響を受けています。

例えば、フランス語は公用語ではないものの、多くの人が流暢に話します。

そして、国際的な交流も盛んなので、英語を話す人が多いとの事。

また、アルジェリアの教育制度は無料で、特に理工系の教育水準が高いそうです。

これは、私には想定外のこたえでした。（汗）

経済面では、アルジェリアは石油と天然ガスの輸出に依存しており、

これらの資源がGDPの大部分を占めています。

しかし、近年はエネルギー依存から脱却し、

多角化を図るための政策が進められています。

農業や観光業、IT産業の発展も期待されており、

政府は外国企業の投資を積極的に誘致しているようです。 

また、アルジェリアの労働市場について尋ねると、

「多くの若者が公務員を目指すものの、競争が激しく、失業率も高い。

だからこそ、海外でのキャリアを考える人も多い」とのことでした。

彼もその一人で、場合により日本企業での就職を目指しているようです。

〇アルジェリアと世界

彼はまた、日本とアルジェリアの歴史的なつながりや

国際関係についても話してくれました。

これに関して、私には思いがけない話がありました。

日本の中でも、広島や長崎に対する関心が特に高いようです。

理由は「アルジェリアではフランスが何度も核実験を行った過去があり、

反核意識が非常に高いです。

だからこそ、被爆地である広島や長崎のことはよく知っています」とのことでした。

私は　こうした事は全く知らなかったので驚きました。

昨年の日本の被団協のノーベル平和賞受賞を機会にこうした国との

交流・連携を深めるべきだとも強く思いました。

 さらに、現在の国際情勢についても触れ、

「アルジェリアでは反イスラエルの感情が強い」とも話していました。

パレスチナ問題との関連もあるようで、彼の説明を聞いていると、

国際政治の複雑さを改めて感じました。

まとめ

アルジェリアの青年との出会いは、私にとってとても刺激的なものでした。

彼との会話を通じて、アルジェリアという国の文化や歴史、

さらには国際関係について知ることができました。

私たち日本人にとって馴染みの薄い国かもしれませんが、

実は私たちの知らない世界がそこには広がっているのだと

実感しました。

彼が今後どのような未来を歩んでいくのか、

そして彼が夢見る日本でのキャリアを実現できるのか、とても楽しみです。

これからも異文化交流を通じて、

新しい発見をしていきたいと思いました。

Do You Know Where Algeria Is?
NO.2 – The Real Situation in Africa as Told by an International Student

This is a story about an Algerian international student
I met last year.
Since I have never been to Africa,
I asked him about various real-life situations there.

Social Life, Industry, and Economy in Algeria
I was able to hear some fascinating stories from him
about social life in Algeria.
Algeria has a history of gaining independence from
French colonial rule and
still retains influences from French culture today.

For example, although French is not an official language,
many people speak it fluently.
Additionally, due to active international exchanges,
many Algerians also speak English.
The education system in Algeria is free,
and the level of education, particularly in science and engineering,
is reportedly high.
This was an unexpected answer for me! (Sweat)

Economically, Algeria relies heavily on the export of oil and natural gas,
with these resources accounting for a significant portion of its GDP.
However, in recent years,
the country has been working to diversify its economy and
reduce dependence on energy resources.
There are high expectations for the development of agriculture, tourism,
and the IT industry,
and the government is actively attracting foreign investment.
When I asked about the Algerian job market,
he told me, “Many young people aim to become public servants,
but competition is fierce, and the unemployment rate is high.
That’s why many consider building a career abroad.”
He himself is one of those individuals and is considering the possibility of
working for a Japanese company.

Algeria and the World
He also spoke about the historical connections and
international relations between Japan and Algeria.
I was surprised to learn that there is significant interest in Hiroshima and
Nagasaki in Algeria.
The reason, he explained, is that
“France conducted multiple nuclear tests in Algeria,
and as a result, there is a strong anti-nuclear sentiment in the country.

That’s why we are well aware of the atomic bomb sites in
Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”
I was completely unaware of this and was quite surprised.

The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Japan’s atomic bomb survivors’ organizations
last year made me strongly feel that Japan should deepen its exchanges and
cooperation with countries like Algeria.
Furthermore, he touched on the current international situation and mentioned, ”
There is strong anti-Israel sentiment in Algeria.”
This appears to be linked to the Palestinian issue,
and listening to his explanation reminded me once again of
the complexities of international politics.

Conclusion
Meeting this young Algerian was an incredibly stimulating experience for me.
Through our conversations,
I gained a better understanding of Algeria’s culture, history,
and international relations.
To Japanese people, Algeria may be an unfamiliar country,
but I realized that there is a vast and unknown world out there.
I am looking forward to seeing what kind of future
he will carve out for himself and
whether he can achieve his dream of working in Japan.
Through intercultural exchanges,
I hope to continue making new discoveries.
